About MGPO

Protecting and preserving Pakistan's mountain ecosystems and empowering communities since 2001.

Our Story

History & Background

The Mountain and Glacier Protection Organization (MGPO) was established in 2001 as a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental protection in the high mountain ranges of Pakistan. Over the years, MGPO has evolved from an environmental protection organization into a comprehensive practitioner of integrated development. Its history reflects a steady growth that has shaped its philosophy, nature, and scope of work.

MGPO's experience ranges from environmental protection work in the high mountain ranges of Pakistan to integrated rural development programmes in other parts of the country. All programmes aim to help disadvantaged communities through empowerment and provision of basic needs and services.

With over two decades of experience, MGPO has reached thousands of households across Gilgit-Baltistan and other regions of Pakistan, implementing projects in partnership with leading international organizations including UNDP, USAID, the European Union, and the Coca-Cola Foundation. In partnership with UNDP and Global Water Challenge, MGPO helped replenish 9 billion liters of water to mountain ecosystems.
